American Eagle Airlines is the regional partner of American Airlines, one of the largest scheduled passenger airlines in the world. American Eagle operates over 1,800 daily flights to more than 150 cities across the US, Canada, the Bahamas, Mexico and the Caribbean.

American Eagle started in the mid-1980s as a collection of regional airlines which were contracted to fly for American Airlines at that time. Flying turbo-prop aircraft of various sizes, these airlines were:

Mesaba Airlines was founded in 1944 by Gordy Newstrom in Coleraine, Minnesota. It began operations in the same year under the name of Mesaba Aviation. Mesaba, which took its name from the American Indian word for Soaring Eagle, initially operated one airplane, a Piper Cub purchased for $1,300. Mesaba used the Cub to shuttle employees of the Blandin Paper Mill Company from Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Minneapolis.

Piedmont Airlines was founded in 1931 when Richard A. Henson began a fixed-base operation as Henson Aviation in Hagerstown, Maryland. More than thirty years later, in 1962, Henson Aviation began scheduled passenger service as the Hagerstown Commuter between Hagerstown and Washington National.

Air Wisconsin Airlines was founded in Appleton, Wisconsin and began operations on August 23, 1965. Originally established to provide service between Appleton and Chicago, IL, the airline quickly grew beyond these borders and began providing service to multiple destinations.

Airline Profile: Colgan Air

Colgan Air began operation in 1965 as Colgan Airways Corporation. Charles J. Colgan Sr. started the company and it became the fixed based operator (FBO) at Manassas Airport in Virginia. In 1970 the company began scheduled airline operations between Manassas and Washington's Dulles Airport and Poughkeepsie, NY under contract with IBM which was located in Manassas at that time.

Gulfstream International Airlines was founded in 1988 by Thomas L. Cooper, a former captain for Eastern Airlines. Gulfstream began operating initially as an "on-demand" charter airline serving South Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas. In 1990 Gulfstream was granted a permit to operate scheduled flights into six additional destinations in the Bahamas Islands, soon followed by routes from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale to Nassau and Freeport, Bahamas.

Lynx Aviation, Inc. is the successful regional carrier that operates solely for Frontier Airlines based in Denver, Colorado. It is the only regional carrier that Frontier uses, and has been performing extremely well in the western states.
